Makeup is an accessory, a way to show our personal style and speak something to the world that is uniquely us, right? Unfortunately a bad habit or technique can sometimes send the wrong message so here are a few tips to prevent a communication mishap.
1. Your pillow case is not a washcloth. Taking a few minutes at the end of every day to remove every last drop of makeup on your face will pay off in the long run I promise. Your skin does most of it's repair work at night while you sleep and it can't do that if it is clogged with old makeup, dirt and oil. If you find yourself collapsing at bedtime then make it a habit to do your scrubbing as soon as you get home from work. I promise, years later you will thank your young self for this effort!
2. Shimmer 3. Shimmer 4. Shimmer. So at this point you are thinking that I have something against shimmer and sparkles but that couldn't be farther from the truth. I LOVE a good shine when it is in the correct location and used judiciously. Use a matte shadow to enhance the brow area- a light shimmery shadow screams "here I am" and actually calls attention away from your eyes- especially in pictures! Shimmer on mature skin can showcase fine lines and shimmer on skin with any texture issues ( acne or old scars) can enhance the issues vs creating a flawless look. Here is a good rule of thumb: if you want to call attention to something use light colors and/or a shimmery product in moderation. Less is more. Sparkle on!
5. Concealer as foundation 6. The wrong color foundation. Never having been blessed with perfect flawless skin, foundation has been my friend for many many years. If used incorrectly it can be a bad friend however. Concealer is to be used in small areas- to cover a blemish or hide under eye discoloration but slathering it over your entire face will never create the real skin look that we should be after with our cosmetics. Using layers of foundation primer and a lighter weight foundation will always work best. Products like MAC Fix plus and rosewater sprays can also improve the skin look and remove any powdery finish. Foundation should also not be used to appear tan. It should be a perfect match for your face, neck and chest. Bronzer and or blush can add color and warmth to your complexion.
7. Trendy looks that don't fit your coloring or bone structure are like wearing a dress that doesn't fit- it doesn't matter how pretty the color or pattern of the dress is, it isn't going to be flattering in the wrong size. The key to a killer personal style is taking hints from the runway to stay up to date but only using what is flattering to you!
